Individual Will Writing

Single with no partner or children? Inheritance Wills explains why Single Wills matter and offers fixed-fee, face-to-face Will Writing across East Anglia.

It’s a common myth that only married couples or parents need a Will. In fact, if you’re single, with no partner or children, having a valid Will in place is arguably even more important. Without one, the law decides who inherits your estate and that might not be who you’d choose.

Why a Single Will is just as important

Many people assume that Will writing is only for those with a spouse, children or a large estate to pass on but this isn’t the case. If you’re single, whether you’ve never married, are divorced, widowed or simply choose to be single, you still have savings, possessions and possibly a home or business that you’ll want to go to the right people when you pass away.

A Will is a legal document which sets out what you would like to happen to everything you own, known as your estate, once you’re no longer here. Without one, you have no say in the matter and the people you care about most, whether that’s a partner you’re not married to, close friends, godchildren or a favourite charity, may not receive anything at all. This is exactly why getting a Single Will written deserves just as much attention as it does for families.

What happens if I die without a Will?

This is where a Will becomes particularly important for single people. If you die without a Will, your estate is distributed according to the Government’s standard intestacy rules, known as the ‘Rules of Intestacy’. These rules follow a strict order of blood relatives and they don’t take into account close friendships or unmarried partners.

For someone with a partner they haven’t married, this can mean your partner receives nothing at all, regardless of how long you’ve been together. For someone without children, your estate could pass to parents, siblings or more distant relatives you may not have seen in years, rather than the people who actually matter to you. If you have no living relatives that the rules recognise, your estate could even pass to the Crown.

This is one of the main reasons why Single Wills are so important. Without one, you have no control over who benefits from everything you’ve worked hard for.

What can a Single Will include?

A Single Will covers much the same ground as any other Will, but it gives you the chance to make sure your specific circumstances are properly reflected. With our face-to-face Will Writing service, we take the time to understand your situation and make sure nothing is missed.

Choosing who inherits

You can name exactly who you would like to benefit from your estate, whether that’s a partner, friends, siblings, nieces and nephews or a cause close to your heart. You can also leave specific gifts, such as a sum of money or a treasured possession to particular people.

Leaving specific instructions

If there’s anyone you would specifically like to exclude from your Will, or particular circumstances you want to plan for, your Will can address this too. We give full, free advice to make sure you understand how each decision affects your estate.

Appointing your executors

Your executors are the people responsible for carrying out your wishes and distributing your estate. As a single person, you may wish to appoint a trusted friend or family member rather than assuming your unmarried partner will take this role.

Recording your funeral wishes

Your Will can also be used to document your funeral wishes, so your loved ones know exactly what you would like and aren’t left guessing during a difficult time.

Why choose Inheritance Wills for your Single Will

We understand that Will writing can feel like something to put off, particularly if you assume it only applies to families. At Inheritance Wills, we’ve spent over 15 years helping people across Cambridge, Ely, King’s Lynn, Swaffham and Peterborough put their wishes into a clear, valid Will, whatever their circumstances.

Our face-to-face Will Writing appointments mean you can ask as many questions as you like and fully understand the process, with no jargon and nothing left unexplained. Appointments can take place in the comfort of your own home, at one of our welcoming high street branches or online. We work on a fixed fee basis, with no hourly charges or hidden costs, and all prices are explained before we start drafting your Will.

We’re proud members of the Society of Will Writers, approved by Trading Standards under their ‘Buy with Confidence’ scheme and fully insured for your peace of mind. It’s this combination of transparency, experience and genuinely friendly advice that has made us a trusted name for thousands of local individuals and families.

Being single doesn’t mean your wishes matter any less. A Single Will simply makes sure they’re written down, so the people and causes you care about are properly looked after, rather than being left to a set of rules that may not reflect your life at all. Whether you want to provide for a partner, friends or a charity close to your heart, putting a Will in place is one of the simplest ways to protect what matters to you.

If you’re ready to talk through your Single Will, or you’re still weighing up whether it’s the right time, we’re happy to help either way. Get in touch with Inheritance Wills today for free, no obligation advice, and let one of our friendly team guide you through the process from start to finish.

We recommend reviewing your Will every three years or sooner if your circumstances change. This applies just as much if you’re single. A new relationship, a change in friendships, a house move or simply a change of mind about who should inherit your estate are all good reasons to revisit your Will and make sure it still reflects your wishes.

At Inheritance Wills, we charge just £199 for a Single Will in most cases for a standard Will, although in more complex circumstances we may charge more. We keep our prices transparent, however, so you’ll know what you’re paying up front.
